Lymphedema is a swelling which may arise when the lymph system is comprised. Lymph fluid is a protein-rich fluid which collects in the tissues when the natural lymph drainage system has been interrupted.
A percentage of individuals undergoing breast surgery may develop Lymphedema as a complication from surgery Lymphedema can also occur following surgery for cancer of the pelvic area and for resections for lymphomas and melanomas.
